Thinking about how we can play our part through shopping locally and sustainably, getting creative with our gifts and wrapping, the small changes we make can have a considerable impact. At a time of year where stress levels are already on the rise, we’ve pulled together a few tips to help you think about how you can make this Christmas the most sustainable ever!
It is the sixth workshop of the Oldham Energy Futures project, and things are starting to feel real. All the discussions and thoughts of previous workshops have come together at this point to explore the question of what, in Sholver, the community can actually do.
The most sustainable outfit is probably the one you already have hanging in the back of your wardrobe. It may be one that you no longer glance at, but that doesn’t mean you can’t glam up the outfit a little and give it a fresh look. From different accessories to changing up the length, small tweaks can have a huge impact.
The idea for the moths to a flame project was to elevate the voice of young people in climate change discussions and give space for them to raise concerns, discuss what was happening in their local area and think about what needs to change to combat the climate crisis.
Squash is a women-led, bold and ambitious community organisation established by Clare Owens and Becky Vipond. It has been rooted and home-grown on Windsor Street in Toxteth, Liverpool since 2010. Embracing art, food, and environmental focus, they are committed to affecting their neighbourhood’s creative, participatory, positive social change.
Three early themes began to emerge on the need for improved sustainable transport, a central hub providing advice on energy efficiency at home and increased renewable energy generation that could be located within and power the neighbourhood. Transport measures were top of the list with ideas for improving the cycle and walkability within the neighbourhood and connecting to Oldham, an e-scooter scheme, cheaper public transport options, traffic calming measures and a one-way Featherstall Road all shared.
For our 3rd workshop, we interviewed Hazara in Westwood to hear her thoughts on transport and green spaces in her neighbourhood and what she had learned in the workshop.
With both Westwood and Sholver residents, we did a walking tour of the neighbourhoods to understand the on-the-ground experience of walking in the local area. This prompted community discussions around how people travel within the neighbourhood and further afield to key destinations
For our second workshop, we interviewed Melissa and Alison in Sholver and Ibrahim in Westwood to hear their thoughts on energy efficiency in their homes and what they had learned in the workshop.
We began our exploration into how Sholver and Westwood communities can improve their neighbourhoods and tackle climate change in the place where we tend to start most journeys – at home…
